Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees are the governing body of the school and they are accountable for student achievement.

They are the employer of all staff in the school, and are responsible for setting the school's strategic direction in consultation with parents, staff and students.  They are also responsible for ensuring that the school provides a safe environment and quality education for all its students, curriculum, policies, property, finance and administration.
The Board are elected every three years.  The last election was in June 2016 and the next full election will be held in 2019.
Board of Trustees meeting dates for 2017

Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of every month at school - please check the calendar on the home page as the dates sometimes need to change.  Meetings start at 6:30pm and normally last for 2 to 3 hours.

Board meetings are not public meetings, they are meetings that are held in public.  This means that while anyone is welcome to attend, if you would like to speak at the meeting you need to write to the Board Chairperson to request 'speaking rights' in advance of a meeting.  Your request for speaking rights should include information on what you would like to speak about and any documentation that would be relevant for the Board to have.
Contacting the Board of Trustees

Members of our school community are always welcome to contact the Board of Trustees.  The easiest way is via email: BOT@pegasusbay.school.nz.  Correspondence should be addressed to the Chairperson.  However, please note that issues regarding specific children or members of staff should always be raised in the first instance with those most directly involved, and school management prior to making contact with the Board.

Gregory Van Meer
I have been living in North Canterbury for the past 8 years after spending 8 years living and working in the UK.  I live in Pegasus with my wife and three children – two of whom attend the school.  I am a qualified accountant, working for Opus International as the Southern Region Business Services Manager, and I bring both Financial and IT systems experience and expertise to the board.  I enjoy working with the Board to best utilise our state of the art buildings and collaborative teaching practices, while also ensuring it retains the fun, friendly and family inclusive atmosphere that we have all come to love about our school.

Sonya Faisst
Kia ora,
We moved to North Canterbury last year as my husband is originally from Tuahiwi and currently have 3 tamariki attending Pegasus.  As our children whakapapa to this area we really value that our kura reflects that ancestry through place-based education and kaitiaki values. As a family we enjoy playing rugby, attending surf club and skiing.  We also love to gather kai like eel, whitebait, paua and cockles. I have been a teacher for over 20 years and currently teach Te reo Māori part-time at Waitākiri School in Burwood. My passions in education are; maximising the potential in all children, developing life-long learners and establishing strong values to stand our children in good stead not only now but in later life. I look forward to not only supporting our management, teachers and support staff but also building strong relationships with our local hapū Ngāi Tūāhuriri and continued support of Te Ao Māori.

Andrew Tolman
I brought my family to North Canterbury in 2007 and I now have two energetic boys one of which attends Pegasus Bay School. We enjoy exploring the region and participate in local sports teams and events such as mountain biking, running and football.  I’ve had a 20 year Information Technology career and 12 months ago I moved into a National Facilities Management role for an IT infrastructure company where I’m responsible for running four large Data Centres in NZ. I’m constantly looking at ways to design and maintain these facilities more efficiently and environmentally friendly with leading edge systems sourced nationally and overseas. I’m very lucky that my job takes me around NZ and the globe to keep myself up to speed in this competitive industry.  The design of Pegasus Bay School has created a friendly, positive and diverse learning environment that our children have embraced. Our children have a very exciting future here and I feel in can contribute my skills and knowledge to the BOT in supporting the schools development.

Cushla Waghorn
Kia ora,
I moved to Waikuku Beach in 2004 with my husband Andy and quickly fell in love with the community and life style here. We have two sons who both attend Pegasus Bay School and we are enjoying watching them grow and learn within their community.
I have been a Social Worker for over 17 years and have worked with children and families in several different areas of Social Work over that time. I began my career as a Social Worker in Schools before moving to England and working in Care and Protection. When I returned to New Zealand I started working in the area of disability and currently, I am working as the School Attendance Advisor for North Canterbury. In my current role I work alongside schools, community agencies and whanau to support students to attend school and to engage in their education.  This role has given me an insight into the current education system in New Zealand and how this can be experienced by different students and whanau.
Libby Cunniffe
Kia ora.  I live in Pegasus with my husband and three children.  Two of my children attend a local preschool and one attends Pegasus Bay School. We have been living in North Canterbury for the past 10 years (minus a stint in Western Australia) with the last 5 of those in Pegasus.  I am a qualified Early Childhood Teacher and have worked in the Education sector for the last 15 years, both in NZ and Australia, predominantly in management.  I currently own my own business, 4E's Consulting. The skills that I bring to the Board are education knowledge, particularly with very young children, as well as management, business and communication skills.  I am looking forward to being on the Board to advocate for our children and our school as an evolving environment empowering lifelong learning within the Pegasus community.
Scottie Young
Kia ora! My name is Scottie Young and I am married to the lovely Leanne. We have three awesome little blokes called Connor, Theo and Max that are all attending Pegasus Bay School. I was born and raised as a true one eyed Cantab with a 15 year background in youth work and community building.I am currently leading the church that meets right here in the Pegasus Bay School hall and I am looking forward to playing my part to see the school and the wider Pegasus town become a safe, empowering, uplifting community so that our tamariki can thrive.
